NEW YORK, NY, August 03, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ — Joan Ava Gillman is a science teacher at The Browning School. While she has been working in the education field for nearly four-and-a-half decades, long before she was ever a teacher, she was a learner.
“I’m a lifelong learner,” Gillman explains, and she brings that inherent curiosity to her work as an educator. “I don’t remain stagnant and just teach the same way that I taught 45 years ago… I’m always updating my curriculum, taking workshops, and going to conferences.”
Rather than relying on a specific textbook, Gillman prefers to develop her own lessons. She does this to make them interdisciplinary, tying together all the different subjects in a way that is both compelling and informative for students.
She describes, “It’s really the way life is. It works that way and shows how I make my lessons interdisciplinary. But I feel it’s much more meaningful to the students when you do that.”
Gillman’s roots as a teacher stretch back to her time in high school, where she and her peers had a community service graduation requirement. To meet this, she started volunteering in lower classes, tutoring in math, teaching the recorder, and organizing games and events. The principal was so impressed that she was “ready to hire me on the spot if I was already a teacher,” says Gillman.
The more she taught, the more she realized just how much she absolutely loved working with children. Eventually, it became clear; this was the right career for her, so she followed that dream.
Moving forward, Gillman received a curriculum grant this summer and is now in the midst of revamping the kindergarten and fourth-grade science curriculum.
She says, “They wanted NGSS aligned, Next Generation Science Standards aligned. So I’m reworking that for the first time.”
Despite having been in the field for nearly four-and-a-half decades, Joan Ava Gillman is far from content to rest on her laurels. She remains passionate about continuing to pursue the best possible educational resources for her students to better prepare them for the world beyond her classroom.
Gillman concludes, “I aim to inspire my students to go into the field of science through my classes.”
