BIRMINGHAM, AL, October 15, 2026 /24-7PressRelease/ — More than thirty years after Street Fighter II took over arcade machines around the world, Ryu and Ken are trying once again to conquer cinemas. History has not been kind to them: the 1994 film with Jean-Claude Van Damme is remembered more as a punchline than a faithful adaptation, and The Legend of Chun-Li in 2009 barely left a mark.
This new version takes a different approach. Legendary Entertainment’s Street Fighter is set to open in US theaters on October 16, 2026 through Paramount Pictures, with several markets in Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific getting it a little earlier, around October 14.
The story: back to 1993
The film deliberately sets its story in 1993, when Street Fighter II was at the height of its popularity. Ryu and Ken, two fighters who have not spoken in years, are recruited by Chun-Li to take part in the World Warrior Tournament.
The tournament turns out to be more than a brawl. Behind it lies a conspiracy that forces the three of them to work together again, whether they like it or not. For fans, the premise feels familiar: a tournament, an old rivalry, and the shadow of M. Bison behind it all.
If you would like to watch it after its theatrical run, it will most likely land on Paramount+, while Movie Box, Netflix, HBO and similar services can keep you company with other action films.
An unexpected director
The director’s chair goes to Kitao Sakurai, a name many people may not know yet. He is best known for Bad Trip, the prank comedy released on Movie Box, and for his directing work on The Eric Andre Show. The choice hints that this film will not take itself too seriously.
The project took a winding road. Danny and Michael Philippou, the duo behind Talk to Me, were attached before stepping away in June 2024 because of scheduling conflicts. The script is by Dalan Musson.
Distribution also changed hands. The film was originally going to be released by Sony, before Legendary moved it to Paramount as the first film in a multiyear worldwide distribution deal between the two studios. For a smoother streaming experience, feel free to check out Paramount+, MovieBox App, Netflix, HBO or other similar platforms.
A crowded cast
The lead trio is Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken and Callina Liang as Chun-Li. Koji has already proven his martial arts skills in the series Warrior, while Centineo is known for To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Black Adam.
What has people talking, though, is the supporting cast. Jason Momoa plays Blanka, 50 Cent is Balrog, and WWE star Roman Reigns appears as Akuma. Cody Rhodes, also from WWE, plays Guile.
David Dastmalchian, the character actor who often steals scenes in The Suicide Squad and Late Night with the Devil, takes on M. Bison. Eric André appears as Don Sauvage, and country singer Orville Peck plays Vega, the masked fighter who fits his stage persona perfectly.
Why this time could be different
Video game adaptations are in a much better place than they were two decades ago. The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Sonic the Hedgehog and the series The Last of Us have shown that audiences will turn up as long as the source material is respected.
The 1993 setting is a sign that Street Fighter wants to capture the spirit of the arcade era rather than force a modern makeover. The professional wrestlers in the cast also promise fight choreography that feels more physical and convincing.
Even so, a film with this many characters always faces the same risk: too many faces, too little time. Sakurai’s challenge is to give every fighter a memorable moment without turning the story into a list of cameos.
Availability by region
In the United States, Street Fighter is released by Paramount Pictures, while several Asia-Pacific countries have an earlier date of around October 14, 2026. For Indonesia, the exact date still depends on local cinema chains, so check your usual cinema app.
For streaming, Paramount films usually arrive on Paramount+ a few weeks after their theatrical run, but no official date has been announced. Paramount+ is also not available in every country, so in some regions the film may first appear as a digital rental or purchase.
What to keep in mind
At the time of writing, there are no official review scores or box office figures, because the film has not yet opened in most markets. Avoid claims circulating on social media until there is data from the studio or review aggregators.
What is confirmed: the director, the lead cast, the 1993 setting and distribution through Paramount. What could still change: release dates in specific countries and the streaming schedule.
Worth the wait?
For a generation that grew up with “Hadouken!” ringing out of arcade machines, this film is a chance to see these characters treated more seriously, or at least with more affection. For general audiences, Street Fighter promises a busy, colorful action film full of familiar faces.
Keep expectations reasonable: do not expect heavy drama, but do expect exciting fights. If Sakurai manages to balance humor and action, this could finally be a Street Fighter adaptation remembered for the right reasons.
